Market view

Germany is the strictest market we build for, and the most predictable.

German requirements are unusually explicit, which is helpful once you know them. A commercial website needs an Impressum. A consumer store needs clear withdrawal rights, delivery and pricing information, and correct VAT presentation. Consent for non-essential cookies must be obtained before anything loads, and German enforcement of that is stricter than most. None of this is optional, and getting it wrong attracts formal complaints in a way that is rare elsewhere.

Payment behaviour is also distinct. PayPal is very widely used, SEPA direct debit is standard for recurring billing, and payment by invoice remains genuinely popular for consumer purchases, which surprises teams used to card-first markets. A store that offers only cards will convert poorly regardless of how good the design is.

Data location matters to German buyers more than to most. Hosting inside the EU, ideally in Germany, is the default expectation for business customers and often a procurement requirement. We host accordingly, keep processing agreements straight, and document what data goes where so you can answer that question without hesitation.

Invoice as a payment method
Alongside PayPal, SEPA and cards, because Germans use it.

Local detail

Germany specifics we plan for.

Impressum is mandatory
Commercial sites must carry an Impressum with specific company details, reachable from every page. We build it in rather than treating it as a content task for later.
Consent enforcement is strict
Pre-ticked boxes, nudged acceptance and scripts loading before a choice are all problems here. We block everything non-essential until consent and document the inventory.
Payment by invoice
Buying now and paying later by invoice is normal in German retail, often through Klarna or a similar provider. Offering it changes conversion materially.
German text is long
Compound words break layouts designed for English. We design around real German copy so navigation, buttons and headings hold together.
Data location questions
Business customers ask where data is stored and who processes it. Hosting in the EU with documented data flows makes that a short answer.
Withdrawal rights
Consumer stores must present withdrawal and returns information clearly. We build those pages and the checkout confirmations that reference them.
What it costs

What changes the price.

Compliance
Legal and consent depth
A consumer store with withdrawal rights, invoice payment and full consent management is more work than a B2B brochure site.
Language
German only or multilingual
German plus English means two designed views with their own SEO, not a translation toggle.
Commerce
Payment routes
PayPal, SEPA, invoice, giropay and cards each add integration and live testing time.
Questions

Websites for Germany: common questions

Do you know the German legal requirements?

We build the pages and flows the market expects: Impressum, Datenschutzerklärung, withdrawal rights, delivery and pricing information, and consent handling that blocks scripts until permission. For legal wording we work alongside your lawyer rather than drafting it ourselves.

Can you offer payment by invoice?

Yes, usually through a provider like Klarna that carries the risk. It is a normal expectation in German retail and its absence hurts conversion more than most teams expect.

Where will the data be hosted?

In the EU, and in Germany specifically if you prefer or your customers require it. We document the data flows and which processors are involved so you can answer procurement questions directly.

How strict does the cookie banner need to be?

Strict. Nothing non-essential loads before a choice, refusal must be as easy as acceptance, and the categories must be accurate. We implement it that way and keep an inventory of every script.

Do you write German copy?

We design around German copy and work with native German writing. Layouts are built for German text length rather than translated into a design made for English.

Can you work with a German company remotely?

Yes. Beirut is one hour ahead of Berlin, so the working day overlaps fully. Projects run over calls and shared documents with a fixed, itemised quote up front.
